Hi, I'm Howard. I started Burning Bush Adventures during my second year at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical School. Before becoming a rabbi I worked for Outward Bound in places like Minnesota, Florida, Maine, New York, and the United Kingdom. Much of my work with Outward Bound involved at-risk or adjudicated youth.
The journey from outdoor educator to rabbinical school and eventually to Burning Bush Adventures is filled with a lot of colorful people and powerful encounters in stunningly beautiful wild places. Ultimately it boils down to this: I like spending time outdoors. I like living a Jewish life. I like turning people on to wild places and to Judaism. So turning people on to Judaism in wild places just makes sense for me.
By the way, when it comes to outdoor pursuits my first love is canoeing followed closely by mountaineering. I enjoy climbing (rock and ice), biking, running and gardening. If the activity takes place outside I pretty much like to do it!
I am also one of the few active rabbi/firefighters. In 2002 I joined the Bennington Village Fire Department, Eagle Hose Company, as the department chaplain. They sent me to fire school (yes, fire fighters really go to fire school). Now in addition to my chaplain duties I am my company's Second Lieutenant and I also supervise the junior firefighter program.
I am married to my high school sweetheart. Together we have three great kids, four three chickens, and a cat.
